Why Fair Trade?
Fair trade raises incomes and living standards for small coffee farmers while helping to protect the environment. Fair Trade doesn't provide aid or charity, but instead promotes self reliance and equality for farmers who are disadvantaged under present trading conditions.
Fair Trade practices include:
- Paying farmer families a fair price for their harvest that provides them with a decent living wage.
- Establishing direct, long-term trading relationships between buyers and farmers, fostering sustainability.
- Fair Trade inspectors confirm that the money actually reaches these family farmers in each country of origin and also monitor issues such as labor conditions, women's participation, and democratic representation.
